Leaving Certificate Technology – Design with Purpose, Build with Innovation
Combining Creative Thinking and Practical Skills to Solve Real-World Problems Through Ethical and Sustainable Design
The Leaving Certificate Technology syllabus teaches students to apply their knowledge and practical skills creatively in a design-based approach to solving technological problems. Students learn to be mindful of their impact on the environment while ensuring their designs are ethical and economical.
Technology is divided into two core elements:
- Theory (50%): Assessment of theoretical knowledge takes place in the form of a written exam.
- Practical (50%): Practical skills are assessed by designing and manufacturing an artifact that will solve a problem that exists in society. Students are expected to produce a “Design Portfolio” to tell the story of how the artefact was designed, manufactured and finished.
Technology gives Leaving Cert students a broad and challenging experience. Students learn to think laterally while gaining a body of manufacturing skills and knowledge that will prepare them to be creative, valued participants in the technological world.
Technology is a distinct form of creative activity where human beings interact with their environments, using appropriate materials and processes in response to needs, wants and opportunities. It integrates problem solving and practical skills in the production of useful artefacts and systems.
A Student of Technology will develop the following capabilities;
- the skills of design and realisation
- the ability to apply knowledge and skills by thinking and acting confidently, imaginatively, creatively and with sensitivity
the ability to evaluate technological activities, artefacts and systems critically and constructively.
