TY Programme

Transition Year at CUS – A Year of Growth and Exploration

Balancing Core Academics with Diverse Modules for Holistic Development

At Catholic University School (CUS), the Transition Year (TY) programme offers students a unique opportunity to engage in a year of personal and academic development. The programme is structured into three modules, allowing students to experience various aspects of both curricular and extracurricular activities.

Core Academic Subjects:

Throughout TY, students continue to study essential core subjects such as English, Irish, and Mathematics. This ongoing engagement ensures that students maintain and enhance their foundational knowledge, preparing them effectively for the challenges of the Senior Cycle.

Introduction to Leaving Certificate Subjects:

To assist in informed decision-making for the Leaving Certificate, TY students are introduced to a range of subjects, including:

  • Business Studies (Economics, Business Studies, Accountancy)
  • Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics)
  • Humanities (History, Geography, Classical Studies)

This exposure allows students to explore potential areas of interest and aptitude before selecting their Senior Cycle subjects.

Specialised Modules and Extracurricular Activities:

Beyond core academics, CUS offers a variety of specialised modules and activities designed to foster personal growth and social responsibility:

  • Social Awareness Initiatives: TY students coordinate the annual St. Vincent de Paul charity campaign, involving the entire school community in collecting food and funds for families in need during the Christmas season.
  • Competitions: Students are encouraged to participate in events such as the Young Scientist competition and the AIB Get Up and Go Mini Company, where CUS has a history of commendations and success.
  • Personal Development: Many students undertake the Gaisce – The President’s Award, engaging in activities that promote community involvement and personal challenge.
  • Creative and Physical Activities: Weekly sessions in martial arts, drama, and art provide avenues for students to enhance their fitness and creativity.
  • Certifications: Opportunities to complete courses such as First Aid under the direction of the Red Cross and Microsoft Certification Exams equip students with valuable life skills and qualifications.

Experiential Learning and Trips:

TY students participate in various trips, including a history/classical studies trip and a ski trip in February, offering cultural enrichment and team-building experiences.

Through this balanced integration of core subjects and diverse modules, the Transition Year at CUS aims to cultivate well-rounded individuals, ready to approach their Senior Cycle studies with confidence and a broadened perspective.
