Junior Cycle Technology – Explore, Create, Innovate
Building Curiosity and Practical Skills Through Hands-On Design and Problem Solving
Junior Cycle Technology introduces students to the world of design and problem-solving by combining creativity with practical skills. Students explore how everyday needs can be met through thoughtful design, safe workshop practice, and the use of modern materials and processes.
The subject encourages curiosity and innovation while building an awareness of how technology affects our lives, our communities, and our environment. Students are guided to make decisions that consider sustainability, safety, and the responsible use of resources.
Technology in Junior Cycle is built around three key areas:
- Design and Problem Solving: Students learn to investigate problems, generate ideas, and develop solutions that are practical and imaginative.
- Practical Skills and Realisation: Through hands-on workshop activities, students use tools, machines, and materials to create artefacts, prototypes, and models.
- Technology in Society: Students reflect on how technology influences people, society, and the environment, becoming more responsible users and creators of technology.
Assessment is a balance of:
- Classroom-Based Assessments (CBAs): Students complete design-based projects that highlight their creativity, innovation, and problem-solving skills.
- Final Assessment: A written exam that covers knowledge, skills, and understanding gained throughout the course.
A Junior Cycle Technology student will develop:
- Practical skills in designing, making, and testing artefacts.
- Creative confidence to explore new ideas and solutions.
- An appreciation of sustainability, safety, and ethical design.
- A strong foundation for further study in Technology subjects at Senior Cycle.
Technology at Junior Cycle is about more than just making things — it is about learning how to think critically, act responsibly, and shape ideas into reality.
