Leaving Certificate Spanish – Comunicación, Cultura, Confianza
Developing Language Proficiency Through Real-Life Topics, Cultural Awareness, and Exam Readiness
The Leaving Certificate Spanish course builds on the foundation laid during Junior Cycle, aiming to further develop students’ receptive skills (listening and reading) and productive skills (speaking and writing) in a meaningful and engaging way. The course is designed to help students communicate effectively in both spoken and written Spanish, while also developing a strong awareness of Spanish and Latin American culture, society, and current affairs.
Students study a range of everyday topics such as family, school, travel, health, environment, technology, and careers, and are encouraged to express their personal opinions on these issues both in writing and conversation. They also learn functional writing skills, including emails, diary entries, and opinion pieces.
Assessment is structured as follows:
- Written exam (reading comprehension and written expression) – 55%
- Aural (listening) exam – 20%
- Oral exam – 25%
The course also places a strong emphasis on independent learning strategies, helping students to develop confidence, fluency, and the ability to engage with authentic materials. Spanish at Leaving Cert level not only equips students for academic success but also prepares them for real-world communication and intercultural understanding.
