L.C. – DCG

Leaving Certificate Design and Communication Graphics – Visualise, Design, Create
Developing Spatial Awareness, Technical Drawing, and Creative Problem-Solving Through Real-World Design Challenges
Design and Communication Graphics is a great subject option for students who have a passion for drawing, design, critical thinking and problem solving. Typically, students looking to engage with DCG would score high in the Numerical Reasoning, Abstract Reasoning, Mechanical Reasoning and Space Relations components of the CATs and would enjoy other subjects such as Physics, Applied Maths, Art or Technology.
DCG is divided into two core elements;
- Board Drawing (60%)
- Student Assignment (40%)
The Board Drawing element involves understanding, analysing and communicating information presented both verbally and graphically. Solutions are presented by the student through the medium of technical drawing, with an emphasis on neatness, accuracy and technical proficiency. Problem solving, spatial awareness and abstract conceptualization are developed through the analysis of problems in both 2D, 3D space.
The Student Assignment is a 10-page Design Portfolio presented through mixed media, including; Publisher, Computer-Aided Design (CAD), freehand sketching, photo rendering, etc. The Student assignment runs from September to January of 6th year. Throughout the students’ journey with this assignment they will be researching, investigating, designing and ultimately graphically developing an artefact of their own design using a plethora of creative thinking skills.
