Leaving Certificate History – Investigate the Past, Understand the Present
Developing Critical Thinking, Research Skills, and Historical Awareness Through Evidence-Based Study
History aims to record and analyse events that have happened in the past, with an emphasis on both how and why they occurred. It is crucial when studying history that a student pays attention to the evidence presented, and to keep in mind factors such as bias and propaganda.
Studying History at Leaving Certificate develops a student’s verbal and written communication skills, along with their analytical skills and encourages them to think critically. All vital skills for third-level education.
Students complete a Research Study Report (RSR) as a project worth 20% of their overall grade, while the remaining 80% of the course is assessed in the form of a 2.5 hour Leaving Certificate exam. Each student pick’s his own RSR topic, while the rest of the course examines modern Irish history as well as Europe and the wider world.
