Martial Arts at CUS – Strength, Discipline, and Self-Confidence
Weekly Sessions with Specialist Coach Edd Charlemont
Martial Arts is a unique and valued part of the extra-curricular sports offering at Catholic University School, blending physical fitness with mental discipline in a structured and supportive environment. Held weekly in the Karate Hall, sessions take place every Wednesday under the expert instruction of Sensei Edd Charlemont.
Martial Arts at CUS is popular with a dedicated group of students who choose it not only for the physical challenge, but also for the self-confidence, focus, and respect that it cultivates. The sessions include fundamental techniques such as blocks, kicks, and punches, as well as sparring exercises that help reinforce skill development and practical self-defence strategies.
A central component of the programme is the practice of Katas—structured, dance-like sequences of movements that demonstrate technical skill and help determine student belt levels. Students are currently working on Heian Sandan, a Kata required for achieving the Green Belt, which incorporates techniques and principles learned from previous Katas and sparring experience.
Whether beginners or experienced martial artists, students in the CUS programme are encouraged to grow both physically and mentally. With a focus on discipline, confidence, and mutual respect, martial arts is more than just a sport at CUS—it’s a journey of personal development that extends far beyond the mat.
