Junior Cycle Physical Education – Active Bodies, Healthy Minds
Developing Physical Literacy, Teamwork, and a Lifelong Love of Movement
Junior Cycle Physical Education (PE) plays a vital role in supporting the overall wellbeing of students by encouraging them to be active, confident, and socially engaged. Through a broad and balanced programme, students develop their physical literacy — the motivation, confidence, and competence to be active for life.
The PE curriculum is designed around the key areas of activity outlined in the Junior Cycle Wellbeing Guidelines, including games, athletics, dance, gymnastics, aquatics, and outdoor/adventure activities. Students build skills in movement, communication, leadership, and teamwork while also learning about the importance of physical activity for physical and mental health.
Assessment is ongoing and focuses on participation, personal improvement, and reflection, with students encouraged to set goals and monitor their progress. PE also supports the Wellbeing programme, contributing to students’ personal development and promoting a positive, inclusive school environment.
At CUS, we aim to ensure that every student enjoys their PE experience and gains the tools to lead an active, healthy lifestyle now and into the future.
