Sailing at CUS: Riding the Wind, Racing as a Team

A New Chapter in Extra-Curricular Sport – Team Racing with Skill, Spirit, and Strategy

Sailing has officially joined the extra-curricular sports offering at Catholic University School, with a landmark debut at the Leinster Schools Team Racing Championships. Hosted by the Royal St. George Yacht Club in association with the Irish School Team Racing Association (I.S.T.R.A.), the event marked a proud first for the newly-formed CUS Sailing Team.

The initiative was led by a Third Year student, Finn Byrne, in collaboration with School Principal Mr. Martin, whose months of planning and organising brought this exciting new sport to life at CUS. Interest in the team grew quickly, attracting both experienced sailors and complete newcomers, all eager to represent their school on the water.

Training sessions took place at Malahide Yacht Club during the mid-term breaks, giving students hands-on experience and preparation ahead of the competition.

Team Racing is a fast-paced, tactical form of sailing where competitors rotate through Firefly-class boats supplied on-site. Each school fields three boats, each with a helm and crew, and strategy is just as crucial as sailing ability.

The CUS team impressed at their first outing, winning two out of four races and demonstrating excellent teamwork, adaptability and sailing technique. It was a proud and promising start, especially considering the team’s limited competitive experience.

With growing interest and momentum, CUS aims to further develop its sailing programme. Plans are already in place to enter future events, including the prestigious Elmo Trophy, alongside other school regattas.

Sailing at CUS now offers students a unique opportunity to engage in a sport that combines discipline, teamwork and adventure, both on and off the water. This new extra-curricular activity is already making waves and is set to become a staple of sport at CUS.
