Golf at CUS: Precision, Performance, and Passion on the Course
An Extra-Curricular Opportunity for Golfers to Represent CUS in Competitive Play
Golf is a growing and well-supported extra-curricular sport at Catholic University School, with many students actively involved in the sport outside of school. Each year, CUS enters two major inter-school golf competitions, one for Junior Students (1st to 3rd Year) and another for Senior Students (4th to 6th Year), providing talented players the opportunity to represent the school in competitive tournament play.
The Junior Golf Competition took place at Forrest Little Golf Club. CUS entered two strong teams. The first team featured Ben Cunningham (handicap 1) and Cillian Gray (handicap 5), while the second team was made up of Mark Murray (handicap 15) and Christian Shortall (handicap 14). The CUS golfers put in an excellent performance, with the school finishing fourth overall—an impressive result in a competitive field.
Later in the season, attention turned to the Senior Golf Competition, held at Westmanstown Golf Club. CUS was once again well represented, with Cillian Gray, Darragh Grehan, Oscar Cronin, and Christopher Butler forming one of the school’s senior teams. The competition format was stroke stableford, and the goal was to achieve the best combined score to qualify for the All-Ireland Schools Final at Milltown Golf Club.
Despite a strong showing, including a standout round from Darragh Grehan and Cillian Gray, the team narrowly missed out on qualification, losing to a team that recorded an exceptional 6-under-par—the only under-par round of the day.
In addition to inter-school competitions, CUS runs a number of internal tournaments that are open to all year groups. These include the Fr. Keenan Cup Tournament and a Summer Tournament, both of which give students across the school the chance to compete against one another, showcase their abilities, and enjoy the game in a fun but competitive environment.
Transition Year students also have the opportunity to take part in golf lessons at Leopardstown Golf Club, with dedicated coaching designed to develop different areas of their game. For many, it is a brilliant chance to pick up a new skill, while for others it provides the platform to refine and strengthen their play during TY.
Although qualification eluded CUS this year, the team’s skill, sportsmanship, and competitive spirit were evident throughout. Participation in these events offers students not only the chance to represent the school, but also to compete alongside fellow golfers, improve under pressure, and enjoy the game in a team setting.
Golf continues to thrive at CUS, and with a strong group of talented players, we look forward to more success and memorable moments on the course in the coming seasons.
