Leaving Certificate Mathematics – Logic, Precision, Problem Solving
Deepening Mathematical Understanding Across Five Key Strands with Real-World Application
All Senior Cycle will study Mathematics for two years. Leaving Certificate Mathematics is offered at Higher Level, Ordinary Level and Foundation Level. 25 extra points are awarded to any student who achieves above a H6 (40%) in the Higher-Level examination.
The Senior Cycle Mathematics curriculum is composed of 5 strands. Over the course of 2 years, students will study Statistics and Probability, Geometry and Trigonometry, Number, Algebra and Functions. The content covered is a continuation of that covered at Junior Cycle, whilst also delving deeper into the study of mathematics.
At the end of the two years of study, students will sit two Mathematics papers, for Higher and Ordinary level. Paper one and two are worth equal marks and each paper is two and a half hours long. Both papers are divided into Section A and Section B. Section A features six questions and asks students to show their understanding of Mathematics. Section B usually features 3 questions and asks students to apply their knowledge of Mathematics to real world problems.
Topics that appear on each paper:
| Paper 1 | Paper 2 |
| Algebra | Statistics |
| Functions | Probability |
| Complex Numbers | Geometry |
| Calculus | Trigonometry |
| Sequences and Series | Coordinate Geometry of the Line |
| Financial Maths | Coordinate Geometry of the Circle |
| Area and Volume |
