Empowering Student Voices: The Role of the Student Council at Catholic University School

Fostering Leadership and Advocacy through Active Participation

The Student Council at Catholic University School (CUS) plays a vital role in school life, acting as the official representative body for students across all year groups. Comprised of elected class representatives, the council serves as a platform for students to voice their ideas, concerns, and suggestions—working closely with school management to improve the CUS experience for all.

Elections are held at the beginning of each school year, with one representative chosen from every class. After forming, the council elects its leadership team, appointing a Chairperson, Deputy Chairperson, Secretary, Public Relations Officer, Treasurer, and Irish Language Officer. Together, they establish the council’s key goals for the year and meet regularly to discuss the most pressing issues facing the student body.

The Student Council fosters a spirit of active participation and collaboration. Meetings with senior leadership, including direct consultations with Mr. Martin, ensure that student perspectives are valued and considered in important decisions. The council also provides feedback on key school policies, supports student-led initiatives, and contributes to the overall culture and climate of the school.

CUS is also proudly affiliated with the Irish Second-Level Students’ Union (ISSU), the national body representing secondary school students in Ireland. This connection enables council members to participate in regional and national events, such as the ISSU Annual Assembly, where they take part in workshops, debates, and elections for regional officers. A highlight of this involvement came in November 2021, when a CUS student was elected as a regional officer—demonstrating the school’s strong tradition of student leadership and engagement at a national level.

Through its work, the Student Council empowers students, promotes leadership and communication, and ensures that the student voice is not only heard—but truly makes a difference.
