Chess at CUS – Think Ahead, Play Smart
Sharpening Minds Through Strategy, Focus, and Friendly Competition
Chess is more than just a game at Catholic University School. It is a thriving part of school life that encourages strategic thinking, problem-solving, and intellectual growth. With more students getting involved each year, chess continues to build momentum as one of CUS’s most popular and rewarding extra-curricular activities.
The CUS Chess Club meets every Monday and Wednesday after school, offering a relaxed, inclusive environment where students of all levels, from complete beginners to seasoned players, can challenge themselves and one another. It is a space where minds are tested, friendships are formed, and skills are sharpened, all under the guidance of experienced peers and mentors.
The club has seen remarkable success and expansion in recent times:
CUS hosted its first-ever Chess Congress, welcoming players from across Dublin. The event was a great success, thanks to the enthusiasm and organisation of CUS students. William Hackett (6th Year) represented Ireland at the Chess Mates International Tournament in Germany, helping the team to a 5th-place finish. CUS teams have performed strongly in interschool competitions, including:
- A 6-2 win over the Institute of Education
- A 2nd place finish at Blackrock College
- A draw in a rematch hosted at CUS
- A 10.5 to 3.5 victory against Blackrock, led by captain William Hackett
CUS also proudly hosted its second annual Chess Congress, which attracted both national and international players of all ages. William Hackett, now a past pupil, returned to coach the team and run weekly sessions, including a Christmas Chess Competition, which was won by Finn Cummins (TY).
The club’s achievements continued when the CUS Chess Team competed in an interschool competition at Oatlands College, finishing a commendable 5th out of 18 teams.
At its core, chess at CUS is a space for growth, focus, and fun. It builds skills in concentration, memory, resilience, and decision-making, qualities that extend far beyond the board.
Whether you are aiming for checkmate or simply looking to enjoy a good game with friends, the CUS Chess Club is the perfect place to engage your mind and enjoy the challenge.
