J.C. – Music

Junior Cycle Music – Listen, Learn, Perform
Combining Theory, Practice, and Creativity to Inspire a Lifelong Love of Music
Junior Cycle music offers students the opportunity to incorporate their personal interests and skills.
From First to Third year, the curriculum focuses on basic music theory, aural skills and music appreciation. The inclusion of the Ukulele in the program provides a unique opportunity for students to learn a new instrument that is easy to play and has a distinctive sound.
Basic Music Theory teaches students about rhythm, melody, harmony, and other essential elements of music. The practical component allows students to apply what they have learned in class by playing their instruments or singing. Students can then choose to use this for their practical exam for their Junior Cert or perform on their own instrument that they do outside of school.
Students are encouraged to produce music, both written and digitally, and analyse music such as listening, appreciating music etc. Whilst it is preferrable to have an understanding of music prior to taking the subject, it is not a requirement of the course.
