Student Exchange Programme

Broadening Horizons Through International School Partnerships

Empowering Students Through Cultural Immersion, Global Friendships, and Lifelong Learning Experiences

At Catholic University School (CUS), we believe in the power of global experiences to broaden minds, build confidence, and create lifelong memories. Our Student Exchange Programme offers students the opportunity to immerse themselves in different cultures, develop their language skills, and gain valuable international perspectives—all while representing CUS on the global stage.

Through our exchange partnerships with schools in Spain, Germany, France, and South Africa, students from various year groups participate in language, cultural, and sports-focused exchanges that bring learning to life beyond the classroom.

Why Take Part in a Student Exchange?

Our exchange programme is about more than travel. It’s about:

  • Cultural immersion: Live with host families and experience daily life in another country.
  • Language development: Improve fluency and communication in a natural, real-world setting.
  • Personal growth: Gain independence, adaptability, and confidence through new challenges.
  • Global friendships: Form lasting bonds with students from around the world.
  • Academic enrichment: Learn about different education systems and broaden your world view.

Exchange Destinations

Spain (Córdoba)
Students studying Spanish have the opportunity to participate in an exchange with our partner school in Córdoba. Staying with host families and attending classes, students immerse themselves in Spanish language and culture, while hosting Spanish students in return during the academic year.

Germany (Passau)
As part of our German exchange, students travel to Bavaria and stay with families from a partner school near Passau. Activities include joint lessons, cultural outings, and collaborative learning experiences. Students also host their German counterparts when they visit CUS.

France (Lille)
Our French exchange introduces students to life in northern France. Participants stay with host families, attend school, and engage in local traditions. The return leg allows students to showcase Irish hospitality while forging deep cross-cultural friendships.

South Africa (Durban, Pretoria & Johannesburg)
In partnership with prestigious schools such as Kearsney College, St. Albans, and St. Stithians, our South Africa exchange programme blends sport and culture. CUS students stay with host families, train with local rugby and cricket teams, and immerse themselves in a vibrant and diverse society.

Cultural & Adventure Experiences

Student exchange isn’t limited to international travel. At CUS, we also run immersive domestic programmes like the First Year trip to Killary Adventure Centre in Connemara. These activities build team spirit, encourage resilience, and give students a taste of adventure through kayaking, gorge walking, bog-jumping, and more. It’s the perfect way for younger students to grow in confidence and create strong connections within their year group.

The Value of Exchange at CUS

Exchange programmes at CUS aren’t just about travel—they’re about transformation. They help our students become:

  • Independent thinkers
  • Global citizens
  • Better communicators
  • Culturally aware leaders
  • Curious, adaptable learners

With the support of dedicated staff, host schools, and exchange families, our students consistently describe these experiences as some of the most memorable and formative of their school years.

Whether you’re discovering a new language, navigating a different education system, or bonding with your host family over dinner, the Student Exchange Programme at CUS is your gateway to the world.
