Transition Year Modules – Learning Beyond the Classroom

Challenging, Creative, and Career-Focused Experiences That Broaden Student Horizons

The Transition Year programme at CUS offers students a wide-ranging modular curriculum designed to promote independent learning, personal development, and career exploration. Modules are rotated throughout the year, giving students the chance to sample subjects, gain new certifications, and engage in real-world experiences beyond the traditional classroom setting.

Students explore a broad spectrum of academic areas including Business (Economics, Accounting, Business Studies), Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics), and Humanities (History, Geography, Classical Studies) to inform their Leaving Certificate subject choices. They also continue modern language studies such as French, Spanish, German, and Chinese, supported by exchange programmes.

Specialist modules and certified programmes include:

  • ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence)
  • First Aid Training (with the Red Cross)
  • Microsoft Certification Exams

Creative and active modules such as Drama, Martial Arts, and Art take place weekly, while students also participate in national competitions like the BT Young Scientist Exhibition and AIB Get Up and Go Mini Company.

The TY programme also places a strong emphasis on social awareness, with students leading initiatives like the annual St. Vincent de Paul Christmas Campaign. A dedicated work experience week and one-on-one career guidance sessions ensure students begin to connect their interests with future pathways.

Through this rich variety of modules, students develop confidence, creativity, and clarity about their strengths and goals — preparing them for the challenges and opportunities of Senior Cycle and life beyond school.
