Football

Football at Catholic University School is an exciting and expanding part of the school’s extra-curricular life, offering students the opportunity to develop their game, compete with pride, and be part of a growing tradition of team spirit and success.

In 2023–24, CUS made history by fielding a senior football team for the first time, open to Transition Year students and older. The team was established by Mr. Twamley, and despite being new to competitive play as a group, they achieved remarkable success in their debut season.

After a competitive trial process, a squad was formed for CUS’s first official match—a stunning 9-2 victory over St. David’s in Greystones. The team’s cup run was cut short in the quarter-finals following a narrow 4-3 defeat to a strong Palmerstown side, who scored a last-minute winner. But the team’s journey didn’t end there.

They bounced back in the league campaign, navigating a challenging group that included CBC Monkstown and St. Michael’s to reach the semi-final. Down 3-0 to Oatlands College within 30 minutes, the team launched an incredible comeback to win 7-3 and book their place in the final at the UCD Bowl. Though they fell short against CBC Monkstown in the final, the experience—playing in front of travelling fans and classmates—was a proud and unforgettable moment for everyone involved.

Senior students have regular training and matches throughout the year. Teams compete in East Dublin leagues and competitions, with sessions focused on improving technical skills, building tactical awareness, and developing the values of discipline, resilience, and teamwork. Junior students also get the chance to play friendly matches in the summer term against a number of other schools, giving them an opportunity to enjoy the game and experience the spirit of CUS football.

Under the guidance of passionate coaches and supportive staff, CUS football continues to build momentum—and a reputation for spirit, effort, and excellence. Whether you’re an experienced player or new to the game, there’s a place for you on the pitch at CUS.

As 5th Year student Tom Briody put it:
“There’s no doubt there will be a CUS football team for years to come—and I’m sure in no time, we’ll have some silverware to show for all the work we’ve put in.”
