Leaving Certificate German – Sprache, Kultur, Verbindung

Exploring Contemporary Themes and Cultural Exchange to Build Fluency and Confidence

The Leaving Certificate German syllabus is set out in the context of a common syllabus framework for the teaching and examining of Modern Foreign Languages. The syllabus content draws on the Junior Cycle syllabus and develops many aspects of its aims, objectives and content.

Topics covered in Leaving Certificate German are closely related to topics appearing on the news. Examples of these are, health, the environment, technology, Covid-19/Lockdown, homelessness, education, sport, travel and career plans. These themes are studied and discussed in depth in 5thand 6th Year German to prepare students for both the written and aural/oral exam in German.

In addition to the learning done within the classroom, students of German in TY and 5th Year are presented with the opportunity of participating on a reciprocal language exchange with our Marist School in Bavaria, Germany. Students who have participated on this exchange, particularly in 5th Year, have cited that they felt a boost in confidence in both their written and oral German as well as more of a connection to the culture and an overall deeper understanding of German speaking countries.
