Leaving Certificate Chemistry – Understanding Matter, Shaping the Future
Three vibrant editions a year celebrating student life, achievements, and the Marist heart of Catholic University School.
Chemistry examines the world around us and investigates the composition of matter, the laws of chemical change and the relationship between the properties and composition of substances. Chemistry involves everything we use, wear and consume, including medicines, plastics, metals etc. The course is a blend of theory and practice involving experimental work in the laboratory.
The subject is divided into three broad areas:
- Physical Chemistry
- Organic Chemistry
- Inorganic Chemistry
Major topics studied include:
- Atomic structure
- Volumetric analysis
- Organic reaction mechanisms
- Environmental Chemistry including water
- Equilibrium
- Industrial processes
- Drug synthesis
The Leaving Certificate course has an examinable practical element involving 28 mandatory experiments.
Exam length: 3 hours
Number of questions: 11
Questions answered: 8
Section A – Experiment questions: Answer 2 questions from a choice of 3 (worth 25%)
Section B – Theoretical questions but some parts may include some shorter, lower value experimental questions: Answer 6 questions out of a choice of 8 (worth 75%)
